What a power of attorney is
A power of attorney is a legal document in which one person — the principal — gives another person — the agent, or attorney-in-fact — authority to act on their behalf. Depending on the document, that authority can cover finances, property, legal matters, or health-care decisions.
The agent must act in the principal's interest, and the principal can usually revoke the power while they are still mentally competent. Because it grants real authority, a POA is worth completing carefully and keeping a copy of.
Common types of power of attorney
