What Form I-140 is
Form I-140, Immigrant Petition for Alien Worker, is the USCIS petition that starts the employment-based green-card process. It asks USCIS to classify a worker under one of the employment-based immigrant categories so they can go on to apply for permanent residence.
In most cases a U.S. employer files it as the petitioner on behalf of the worker (the beneficiary). Who files an I-140
The I-140 covers the employment-based (EB) categories, for example:
