An affidavit is a written statement of facts sworn to be true. The person making it — the affiant — signs under oath, which means knowingly lying in an affidavit carries the same legal weight as lying under oath in court. Because of that, affidavits are accepted as evidence in court cases, probate, banking, insurance claims, and many everyday disputes.
