What Form DS-82 is
Form DS-82 is the U.S. Department of State application used to renew a passport by mail. If you already have a passport book that meets the renewal conditions, DS-82 lets you renew without visiting an acceptance facility in person.
You fill it in, print it, and mail it with your old passport, a photo, and the fee. AnyPDFfiller helps you complete the printable PDF cleanly before you print.
Can you renew by mail with DS-82?
You can generally use DS-82 if your most recent passport:
- is undamaged (beyond normal wear) and you can submit it with the application;
- was issued when you were age 16 or older;
- was issued within the last 15 years;
- was issued in your current name — or you can include a document showing your legal name change.
These are the standard conditions; confirm the current requirements on travel.state.gov before you file.
When you cannot use DS-82
If your passport was lost, stolen, or damaged, was issued before you turned 16, was issued more than 15 years ago, or this is your first passport, you cannot renew by mail. In those cases you apply in person using Form DS-11 instead. The DS-82 form itself lists these limits.
What to mail with it
A DS-82 renewal package usually includes the completed form, your most recent passport book, one recent color passport photo that meets the photo requirements, and payment for the fee. The current fee and mailing address are on travel.state.gov — check them, since they change.

DS-82 questions people ask
Is DS-82 for renewal or a first passport?
Renewal only. A first-time passport, or one that doesn't meet the mail-in conditions, uses Form DS-11 in person.
Where do I get a printable DS-82 PDF?
Download the current form from travel.state.gov, then upload it here to fill it. You will print the finished copy to mail, so a clean, typed form helps.
Do I sign it on screen or after printing?
For a mailed passport application, sign the printed form in ink. Fill everything else here first so only the signature is left to add by hand.
How much does renewal cost and how long does it take?
Both are set by the State Department and change over time. Check the current fee and processing time on travel.state.gov before you mail your application.
Is filling it online free?
Yes — completing and downloading the DS-82 here is free; the watermark-free copy is the paid option. The passport fee is separate and paid to the State Department.
